Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy construction machinery to ensure optimal performance, safety, and availability. The role focuses on minimizing equipment downtime through preventive maintenance, timely repairs, and effective coordination with operators, vendors, and OEMs.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Carry out preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, dump trucks, and compactors.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults.
  • Conduct routine inspections and machine condition assessments.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in line with OEM guidelines and company standards.

Technical Support & Operations

  • Provide on-site technical support to equipment operators and maintenance teams.
  • Support equipment commissioning, installation, and performance testing.
  • Train operators on basic equipment care and early fault identification.

Breakdown Management

  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs.
  • Analyze root causes of failures and recommend corrective and preventive actions to reduce repeat issues.

OEM & Vendor Coordination

  • Liaise with OEMs and suppliers for technical assistance, updates, and warranty claims.
  • Coordinate external service providers when required.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and breakdown reports.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance reports.
  • Monitor equipment performance data and report abnormalities.

Spare Parts & Inventory Control

  • Track spare parts usage and recommend replenishment levels.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and usage of tools and spare parts.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with HSE policies and site safety regulations.
  • Promote safe work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure compliance with Nigerian construction and safety regulations.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience maintaining heavy construction equipment.
  • Experience working on construction or infrastructure project sites.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems (engine, hydraulics, transmission, electrical).
  • Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and OEM manuals.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
  • Willingness to work on-site and respond to emergency breakdowns.
